Department of Economics with Foreign Trade:
The Department of Economics with Foreign Trade was established in 1999, marking a milestone in academic innovation. It is a matter of pride that the specialization in 'Foreign Trade' in Economics was first introduced under the University of Calicut at our college, making it a pioneering initiative in the field. This three-year undergraduate program, now extended to a four-year format starting from 2024 as per the new academic reforms, is divided into six semesters (or eight semesters in the four-year structure). The course offers students a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic field of foreign trade, equipping them with knowledge and skills relevant to global economy.
Key areas of study include Foreign Trade Documentation, Logistics, Shipping, Marine Insurance, Foreign Trade Financing and Export Marketing, among others. These core subjects are complemented by allied courses in Banking and Co-operation; ensuring students develop a well-rounded perspective on economics and trade. Additionally, students are exposed to practical learning opportunities that bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
The Department has a rich legacy of leadership and academic contributions. Professor V. C. Vijayan, the founding Head of the Department, laid a strong foundation for its growth. Since 2011, the Department has been led by Vijayalakshmi K. K., under whose guidance it has flourished. Faculty members from the department have had the privilege of serving as members of the Board of Studies (UG) at the University of Calicut, contributing to curriculum development and academic excellence.
With current student strength of 186 and 22 batches of graduates to its credit, the Department continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the academic and professional journeys of its students. From 2024, the implementation of the four-year undergraduate program brings with it enhanced academic rigor and additional opportunities for students to specialize and conduct research in their chosen areas.
A variety of academic programs, such as seminars, workshops, and expert lectures, are regularly organized to broaden students' knowledge and skill sets. At the same time, non-academic programs, including community engagement initiatives, cultural activities, and skill development programs, help foster creativity, leadership, and social responsibility among students. Beyond academics, the department is deeply committed to holistic student development.
The Department of Economics with Foreign Trade also actively engages with the local community, addressing social and economic issues in the backward locality surrounding the college. Through its outreach efforts, the Department contributes to uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the region, ensuring that its impact extends far beyond the classroom.
The programme aims to provide students with a broad-based understanding of economic theory and its practical applications, particularly in the context of global trade and commerce. By integrating foreign trade into its core curriculum, the program equips students with the skills to navigate the complexities of international markets, trade policies, and cross-border economic transactions.
It places a strong emphasis on studying and addressing India's developmental challenges through the lens of foreign trade, highlighting how effective trade policies, export promotion, and economic integration with global markets can play a pivotal role in the nation's economic growth and prosperity. This dual focus on economic theory and foreign trade ensures that students are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to India’s trade competitiveness and overall development in an increasingly interconnected world.
By combining a rigorous academic curriculum with a commitment to social responsibility, the Department of Economics with Foreign Trade continues to uphold its mission of producing skilled professionals and socially conscious citizens ready to thrive in a globalized world.
