The Department of History is a vibrant academic unit that integrates humanities and social sciences. It aims to cultivate values and skills that enable students to become better citizens in our complex, culturally diverse, and increasingly global society. The fundamental mission of the department is to provide students with the opportunity to learn historical facts, interpretations, and methodologies. The curriculum emphasizes quality instruction, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of state, national, and world history.
Upon completing a bachelor’s degree in history, students are expected to have developed analytical thinking, critical reading, and the ability to differentiate historical myths from reality. Additionally, they should be open to new historical interpretations and judgments.
This college was established as a junior college in 1982, offering pre-degree courses in Humanities and Commerce. From the very beginning, two faculty members were appointed to the History Department. In 1993, the department became fully-fledged with the introduction of a degree program in History, sanctioned for 40 students. Initially, the course included History as the main subject, with Political Science and General Economics as subsidiary subjects.
In 2002, the program was restructured to replace Political Science with Archaeology as a subsidiary subject, making it one of the few colleges in the state to offer this specialization. This year, the department has transitioned to the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUP) model, which is designed to meet the evolving needs of the new generation. our department welcomed two new faculty members following the retirement of senior professors in 2011 and 2015. Additionally, one guest faculty member has been included as part of the department."
The department takes pride in its dynamic initiatives, including the sponsorship of certificate courses, annual archaeological exhibitions and seminars. Our department conducting local history projects and surveys on the indigenous people in Palakkad district and nearby areas. Department organised a Heritage -walk related to the ‘Heritage Museum’ and Historic heritage sites. It also organised extracurricular activities that foster a deeper appreciation of history and its relevance in contemporary society.
